Painting the EXTERIOR of your house is a huge job but has the power to totally transform the look of your house in less time and for less cash than any other remodelling project. A good exterior painting job will also protect your investment against weather damage. Once the paint begins to crack and peel it’s time to repair the damage or you may even be ready for a change of style or colour to give your home a fresh new look.
New paint should last for a good number of years, provided you use TOP QUALITY MAATERIALS, apply them with care and most important, do proper PREPARATION of the surface first. One of the most common causes of failure of a house paint job stems from a failure to prepare the painting surface appropriately.
PREPARATION – Cleaning Exterior Surfaces
All surfaces must be prepared thoroughly before painting. Surfaces have to be cleaned from dust, dirt, loose paint, mould or algae. Removing dirt, dust build up and algae works best by using a pressure washer from the top to the bottom of the house in a smooth, controlled manner. A fungicidal solution needs to be applied on affected areas and then be left to dry properly.
PREPARATION – Damaged Surfaces
Any damage areas should be filled and sanded before painting. Remove any loose or chipped paint, surface dirt and fill cracks and holes with a filler like a powder or polyurethane. If the crack or damage is deeper than 10mm, you may have to build up the filler in layers, leaving each layer to dry before applications. Once dry, lightly sand using a medium grit sanding paper.
Also trim gaps around doors and windows using exterior caulk.
PREPARATION – Seal and Prime
Seal and prime new unpainted surfaces and porous or powdery surfaces with a masonry primer. Check the wall surface again for holes and other imperfections and fill if necessary. It always is a good idea to apply a primer to areas that have been filled by a powder to prevent patches showing once the surface is painted.
Prime with a quality sealer. The sealer locks everything in place and creates a good surface for the new paint to stick to. When repainting walls that have become chalky or dusty, select a chalky wall sealer as paint will not stick to a dusty surface.
Choose a Quality Exterior Paint
Today, most exterior paints are water based. Use a Paint that is long lasting, has high water repellence, antifungal and offers high UV protection. A paint with good stretchable (elastic) features will help in covering hair cracks on walls and surfaces.
Surfaces painted with lighter colours reflect the sun’s heat. This results in repainting less often as it reduces paint problems due to expansion.
Colour selection can be overwhelming and you can spend some time driving around your neighbourhood to see what appeals to you. Paint samples (testers) on a surface. This will give you an idea of how it will look but do remember that the colour will look different depending on the time of day and which way the wall is facing.
